Show Notes

Welcome to Roses & Weeds! A City of Tyler podcast to keep you up to date with current events and news related to our beautiful city.

On Thursday, June 17 at 3:30 p.m., President Joe Biden signed a bill establishing Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday. Juneteenth National Independence Day is now the 12th legal public holiday and the first new one since 1983.

To commemorate this moment in history, Roses & Weeds host, Bob Mauldin, sat down with Tyler City Councilwoman for District 3 and Mayor Pro Tem, Shirley McKellar. Together they talk about Juneteenth, how the celebration has evolved, what the holiday means to the Black and African American community in 2021, and how the national designation will change things.
